Smile makeover

What it means

A smile makeover is not a single procedure. It is a treatment plan that combines several treatments to address the appearance of the teeth that show when you smile, sequenced so they work together.

Depending on what you want changed, a plan might draw on whitening, veneers, tooth-coloured fillings, crowns, orthodontics, or replacing missing teeth with implants or bridges.

Why plan it as a whole

Order matters. Whitening is done before veneers or crowns are made, because those materials will not change shade afterwards and are matched to the teeth around them. Alignment is usually corrected before anything is bonded to the front of a tooth, so less enamel needs removing. Doing treatments in the wrong sequence can mean redoing work.

Health first

Any active decay or gum disease is treated before cosmetic work begins. Appearance-focused treatment placed over an untreated problem stores up failure — a veneer on a tooth with decay beneath it is not a solved problem.

How the planning works

1. Examination and discussion. What you want changed, in your words.
2. Records. Photographs, radiographs, and impressions or a scan.
3. A plan with options. Usually more than one route, with the trade-offs, duration and cost of each set out.
4. A preview where possible. A wax-up or digital mock-up so you can see the proposed result before irreversible work begins.
5. Treatment in sequence.

Honest expectations

Results vary between individuals. What is achievable depends on your starting point — the position of the teeth, the health of the gums and supporting bone, how much natural tooth structure remains, and the shape of your bite. Some components are irreversible, particularly where enamel is removed for veneers or crowns.

The purpose of the planning stage is that you understand all of that, and can see a preview of the outcome, before committing to anything permanent.
