What it is
A routine visit with two parts: an examination of your teeth, gums and soft tissues, and a professional clean that removes the hardened plaque (tartar) that brushing cannot shift.
Why it matters
Gum disease is common and often painless in its early stages, which is why it is usually found at a check-up rather than noticed at home. Early decay is also easier and cheaper to treat before it reaches the nerve.
What the appointment involves
The dentist examines each tooth, checks the gums, and looks at the soft tissues of the mouth. X-rays may be taken if there is a reason to look between or below the teeth. Scaling uses an ultrasonic instrument to lift tartar from the tooth surface and just below the gumline, followed by polishing.
Afterwards
Gums may feel slightly tender and teeth briefly more sensitive for a day or two. This settles. If your gums bleed during brushing afterwards, keep brushing gently — bleeding usually reduces as inflammation improves.
How often
Most people are seen every six months. Your dentist may suggest a different interval based on your gum health, decay history, smoking, and medical conditions such as diabetes.
