Teeth whitening

Professional bleaching to lighten the natural shade of teeth, carried out after an examination to confirm it is suitable.

Typical appointment
60–90 minutes in clinic, or two weeks at home

What it is

Whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten the natural shade of tooth enamel. It is carried out either in the clinic in a single longer appointment, or at home with custom-made trays over about two weeks.

What it can and cannot change

Whitening works on natural tooth structure. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings — these stay the shade they were made, which can leave them looking darker or lighter than the surrounding teeth afterwards. Where discolouration comes from within a tooth rather than the surface, other approaches may be needed.

Results vary between individuals, depending on the starting shade and the cause of discolouration.

Before treatment

An examination first, because whitening over untreated decay or exposed roots causes unnecessary sensitivity, and because it helps to know where any existing restorations sit.

Afterwards

Temporary sensitivity to cold is common and settles within a few days. Avoid strongly staining food and drink for the first 48 hours. The effect fades gradually over months to years depending on diet and smoking.
